Founded in 1996 by Jim Holland and John Bresee in a garage in Park City, Utah, the company grew from a niche avalanche gear seller into one of the world's largest online outdoor retailers.

In September 2024, Backcountry was acquired by CSC Generation Enterprise, a technology platform and multi-brand operator known for acquiring and transforming established retail brands. This acquisition followed a period of ownership by TSG Consumer Partners (2015–2024). While Backcountry primarily functions as a retailer for nearly 800 third-party brands, it also produces its own private-label products. These house-brand items are manufactured in multiple countries, following global supply chain standards typical of technical apparel and equipment industries.
