Tayto is an iconic Irish snack brand that revolutionized the global snack industry in the 1950s by inventing the first-ever flavored potato chips, beginning with Cheese & Onion. The brand remains a cultural staple in Ireland, often referred to as 'The Original Tayto' or 'Tayto (Republic of Ireland)' to distinguish it from a separate company with the same name operating in Northern Ireland.
Today, the brand is owned and operated by Tayto Snacks (formerly Largo Foods), which is headquartered in Ashbourne, County Meath. The production facility in Kilbrew continues to manufacture the vast majority of their crisps, supporting the local economy. While the brand feels uniquely local, the ultimate ownership is held by Intersnack Group, a major European snack food conglomerate based in Germany, which acquired the full business to expand its footprint in the British and Irish markets.
