Hotel Chocolat is a British premium chocolatier and cocoa grower that has successfully carved out a unique niche in the luxury food market. Founded in the late 20th century, the brand is notable for its 'more cocoa, less sugar' philosophy and its commitment to ethical sourcing through its Engaged Ethics program.
The company is one of the few chocolate makers in the world to actually grow some of its own cocoa, owning a sustainable cocoa plantation in Saint Lucia. While the raw cocoa is sourced from the Caribbean, Britain, and other tropical regions, the majority of the final production occurs at their own facilities in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, in the United Kingdom.
In a significant shift in corporate ownership, the brand was acquired in early 2024 by Mars, Incorporated. This acquisition was designed to leverage Mars' global supply chain and distribution network to expand the Hotel Chocolat brand internationally, particularly into the US and Asian markets, while maintaining the brand's premium identity and ethical standards.
