Rolodex Rotary Card File

The Rolodex is an iconic office organizational tool consisting of a rotating frame of index cards used for storing contact information. Originally invented in 1956 by Danish engineer Hildaur Neilsen under the direction of Arnold Neustadter at the company Zephyr American in New York, the name 'Rolodex' is a portmanteau of 'rolling' and 'index.' It quickly became a staple of business culture in the mid-to-late 20th century, symbolizing professional networking and personal organization.

Over the decades, ownership of the Rolodex brand shifted as the office supplies market consolidated. After being sold to Insilco in 1970, the brand eventually came under the ownership of Newell Brands (formerly Newell Rubbermaid). While early units were famously manufactured in the United States and Puerto Rico, contemporary production for most Rolodex products has been moved to manufacturing centers in China to meet global distribution needs. Despite the digital revolution, the Rolodex remains a recognized design classic and is still used by professionals who prefer tactile information management.
