Lotus Biscoff Spread, also known as 'cookie butter,' is a creamy or crunchy spread made from the world-famous caramelized Speculoos biscuits. The brand was founded in 1932 by Jan Boone Sr. in the Belgian town of Lembeke. What started as a local bakery specializing in traditional spiced biscuits eventually became a global phenomenon, particularly after the cookies were served as a signature snack on commercial flights in the United States. The spread itself was first introduced in 2007 following a Belgian television competition where a contestant created a recipe using the crushed biscuits.

Today, the brand is owned by Lotus Bakeries NV, which remains a family-controlled company under the leadership of the third generation of the Boone family. While the majority of production still takes place at the original facility in Lembeke, Belgium, the company has expanded its manufacturing footprint to Mebane, North Carolina, in the United States. Additionally, a new production facility in Thailand is slated to become fully operational by 2026 to serve the growing Asian market. In recent years, Lotus has also entered into strategic partnerships with global giants like Mondelez International to expand its distribution in markets like India.
