Founded in 1949 by Gerhard Winkler in Hamburg, the company originally operated under the name 'Gerhard Winkler und Co.' before officially adopting the name travelite to reflect its focus on portable and lightweight suitcases.

Over the decades, travelite has remained a family-owned business, now reaching its fourth generation of leadership under Jan-Oliver Nannen and Alfred Gruber. While the Research & Development and design processes are headquartered in Hamburg-Rahlstedt, Germany, the brand shifted its manufacturing operations to Asia (primarily China) starting in the 1970s and 80s to maintain a competitive price-to-performance ratio. Today, the brand is widely recognized across Europe for its durable trolleys, bags, and travel accessories, often collaborating on licensed products for major partners like Lufthansa.
