E45 is a leading dermatological skincare brand with a heritage dating back to 1952. It was originally developed by a chemist at Boots the Chemists in the United Kingdom to meet a specific hospital requirement for a gentle product that could soothe and protect dry, sensitive skin. For decades, it was used primarily in clinical environments before transitioning into a mass-market retail brand in the 1980s.
Historically, the brand was owned by the British multinational Reckitt (formerly Reckitt Benckiser), which grew E45 into a household name for treating conditions like eczema and psoriasis. In April 2022, Reckitt completed the sale of the E45 brand to Karo Healthcare (formerly Karo Pharma), a Swedish healthcare firm, as part of a strategic shift to focus on other core growth sectors.
Today, while E45 remains deeply rooted in the UK market, its manufacturing is handled through a global network of contract manufacturing partners managed by its Swedish parent company. The product range has expanded significantly from the original cream to include lotions, washes, and specialized facial skincare, all focused on dermatological efficacy.
