Magic Earth is a privacy-focused navigation and maps application that serves as a robust alternative to mainstream mapping services. Originally developed by the creators of Route 66, a pioneer in the GPS industry founded in 1992, Magic Earth was launched to provide high-quality mapping without tracking user data. The app utilizes OpenStreetMap (OSM) data to provide satellite, 3D, and terrain maps, along with real-time traffic information and public transport details.
The application is developed and maintained by General Magic, a Romanian-based company headquartered in Bucharest. Unlike many competitors that monetize user location data, Magic Earth follows a strict no-tracking policy, making it a favorite among privacy advocates. The brand’s roots are deeply tied to the Dutch GPS pioneer Route 66, sharing much of the same technical expertise and historical leadership in the European mapping sector. Currently, it remains an independent project under General Magic, focusing on offline navigation and Crowdsourcing contributions back to the OpenStreetMap community.
