Founded in 2002 by potato farmer William Chase, the brand initially focused on hand-cooked crisps made from potatoes grown within 30 miles of the farm. The product's identity is deeply rooted in its English heritage, often featuring eccentric, vintage-style photography on its packaging.

Over the years, the brand transitioned through several owners, including Langholm Capital, Investcorp, and Amplify Snack Brands (which was subsequently acquired by The Hershey Company). In 2018, Tyrrells was acquired by KP Snacks, a major UK snacks manufacturer. KP Snacks itself is a subsidiary of the Intersnack Group, a German-based multinational that is one of the leading manufacturers of savory snacks in Europe.

While the brand maintains its British roots and continues to operate a primary manufacturing facility in Herefordshire, its international expansion under Intersnack has led to production in other regions. For instance, Tyrrells products sold in the Australian market are manufactured locally by Yarra Valley Snack Foods, while some European distribution may involve Intersnack's extensive network of facilities across the continent.
