Philips Senseo coffee machine

Senseo is a coffee brewing system that was developed by the Dutch companies Philips and Douwe Egberts (now part of JDE Peet's). Originally launched in the Netherlands in 2001, the system gained immense popularity across Europe due to its innovative use of pressurized water forced through a coffee pod, creating a signature layer of crema.

While the coffee pods are produced by various food companies under the JDE Peet's umbrella, the hardware itself is engineered and manufactured by Philips. Most modern Senseo machines are manufactured in Poland, which serves as a central hub for Philips Domestic Appliances production, though historical manufacturing also took place in other parts of Europe and Asia.

In terms of ownership, the brand represents a long-standing partnership. Philips (Koninklijke Philips N.V.) owns the machine design and brand rights for the hardware, while the Senseo trademark for coffee is controlled by JDE Peet's. Following a corporate restructuring, the Philips Domestic Appliances division, which produces these coffee makers, was sold to Hillhouse Capital, though it continues to operate under the Philips brand name.
