Natural American Spirit, often simply referred to as American Spirit, is a premium brand of tobacco products founded in 1982 by Bill Drake, Robert Marion, and Eb Whedbee. The brand was established through the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a vision of providing additive-free, natural leaf tobacco. Its iconic logo, featuring a Native American pipe smoker, was designed to reflect the brand's connection to traditional tobacco use.
In 2002, the brand's parent company was acquired by Reynolds American Inc. Today, the brand's ownership is split internationally following a 2017 transaction. While Reynolds American (a subsidiary of British American Tobacco) maintains ownership within the United States market, Japan Tobacco International (JTI) acquired the rights to the brand for all markets outside of the U.S. This makes it a unique global brand with dual ownership depending on the region of sale.
Domestic production for the American market primarily occurs at specialized facilities in North Carolina. The brand is recognized for its marketing focus on sustainability, its use of organic tobacco in specific product lines, and its distinctive colorful packaging. Despite its "natural" positioning, the products are subject to the same regulatory oversight as all other major tobacco brands worldwide.
