Urge is a citrus-flavored carbonated soft drink that occupies a unique place in beverage history as the direct predecessor to the American brand Surge. Launched by The Coca-Cola Company in Norway on April 22, 1996, the country was chosen as a test market due to its high per-capita consumption of carbonated drinks. The product was originally intended to be named 'Surge' globally, but because the trademark for Surge was already held by another firm in Norway at the time, Coca-Cola rebranded it as 'Urge' for the local market.
While its American counterpart, Surge, experienced a volatile history of discontinuation and specialty re-releases, Urge has remained a steady and popular staple in Norway for nearly three decades. It is primarily produced and bottled by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners at their facilities in Lørenskog, just outside Oslo. Despite being launched in other Scandinavian countries like Denmark and Sweden in the late 1990s, those markets discontinued the drink by 2001, leaving Norway as the only country where the brand is consistently available.
The brand is owned by The Coca-Cola Company, a global beverage leader headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. In the Norwegian market, the operations—including production, sales, and distribution—are managed by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) Norway. The drink continues to enjoy a cult following and significant market share in its home country, often seen as a local success story for the international parent company.
