Katjes Tappsy is a popular vegetarian confectionery product consisting of soft licorice and foam candy shaped like panda faces. The brand is a pioneer in the industry for its commitment to animal welfare and sustainability, having removed animal gelatin from its entire product range years ago.
The product is manufactured in Germany, where the Katjes Group operates three primary production sites. Specifically, licorice and fruit gum products like Tappsy are traditionally produced at the company's headquarters and main facility in Emmerich am Rhein. Since 2020, all of their German production sites have operated on a climate-neutral basis.
Katjes was founded in 1950 by Klaus Fassin in Emmerich, Germany, though its heritage traces back to a 1910 Sicilian licorice recipe. Today, the brand remains a family-owned enterprise under the Katjes Fassin GmbH + Co. KG group. It is led by the fourth generation of the founding family alongside managing shareholders who have expanded the company into one of Germany's largest confectionery manufacturers.
