Carefree is a pioneering brand in the feminine hygiene sector, best known for introducing the first pantyliners to the market. The brand was originally created by Johnson & Johnson in 1976 and became a household name by addressing daily freshness needs beyond the menstrual period.

In 2013, Johnson & Johnson sold its North American feminine hygiene business, including Carefree, to Energizer Holdings. Energizer later spun off its personal care division into a new, independent public company called Edgewell Personal Care in 2015. Today, Edgewell remains the ultimate owner of the brand in the United States and Canada, while in other regions such as Europe and parts of Asia, the brand is often managed by Essity. Manufacturing for the North American market is primarily concentrated at Edgewell's facility in Dover, Delaware, though global production may occur in various regional facilities to serve local markets.
