Columbia Sportswear is an iconic American brand specialized in outdoor apparel, footwear, and equipment. The brand's history began in 1938 when Paul and Marie Lamfrom, who had fled Germany, purchased a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, naming it the Columbia Hat Company after the nearby river. Over the decades, it evolved from a family-owned hat business into a global leader in outdoor gear, particularly under the leadership of Gert Boyle, famously known for her 'Tough Mother' persona, and her son Tim Boyle.

While the company's design and corporate headquarters remain in Oregon, USA, the manufacturing process is global. Columbia does not own or operate its own manufacturing plants but instead utilizes contract manufacturers. Production takes place in approximately 15 countries, with the vast majority of apparel and footwear made in Vietnam, China, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

Today, Columbia Sportswear Company is a publicly traded entity on the NASDAQ (ticker: COLM). However, it remains heavily influenced by the founding family; Timothy Boyle serves as the Chairman, President, and CEO, and the Boyle family continues to hold a significant ownership stake in the company. The corporation also owns other notable outdoor brands such as Mountain Hardwear, SOREL, and prAna.
