Michael Kors timepieces are a prominent example of 'accessible luxury' within the fashion industry. The brand was founded in 1981 by American designer Michael Kors in New York City. While the brand itself is rooted in American high fashion, its watch line was launched in 2004 through a strategic licensing agreement with the Fossil Group.
Under this partnership, the Fossil Group is responsible for the design, development, and global distribution of all Michael Kors watches. Manufacturing primarily takes place in China to maintain the brand's accessible price points, though high-end components like movements are often sourced from Japan (Miyota) or Switzerland. Some premium models may also feature assembly or specialized parts from Switzerland, Germany, or Italy.
As of 2026, the brand remains under the umbrella of Capri Holdings Limited (formerly Michael Kors Holdings Limited), a multinational fashion group that also owns Jimmy Choo. Although a merger with Tapestry Inc. was proposed in recent years, the company continues to operate as an independent luxury conglomerate headquartered in London, with its primary operational base in New York.
