Its origins date back to 1823 in York, England, with the specific 'Chocolate Orange' variant being launched in 1932. The product is famous for its unique shape—a ball divided into segments infused with orange oil—and the tradition of 'tapping' it to separate the pieces.

Historically manufactured at the famous Chocolate Works in York, production was moved following the factory's closure in 2005. Today, the product is primarily manufactured in Strasbourg, France. Ownership has changed hands several times, moving from the original Terry's family to Kraft Foods and later Mondelēz International. In 2016, it was acquired by Carambar & Co, which now oversees the brand's global presence.

While the brand maintains its strong British heritage and cultural identity, its modern operations are integrated into a larger European confectionery network. It remains one of the most recognizable seasonal and everyday treats in the United Kingdom and internationally.
