Pukka Herbs was founded in 2001 by herbalist Sebastian Pole and entrepreneur Tim Westwell in Bristol, United Kingdom. The brand's name is derived from the Hindi word for 'authentic' or 'genuine', reflecting its commitment to organic, ethically sourced ingredients rooted in Ayurvedic principles. From its humble beginnings in a Bristol flat, the brand grew rapidly to become a leader in the premium herbal tea market.
In 2017, the company was acquired by the consumer goods giant Unilever. However, as part of a major corporate restructuring of Unilever's tea business, Pukka was moved under the umbrella of a new entity called Ekaterra. In July 2022, Ekaterra (now known as Lipton Teas and Infusions) was sold to the private equity firm CVC Capital Partners.
While the brand maintains its creative roots and head office functions in the UK, its production is globalized. The tea blends are manufactured through specialized third-party partners located in the United Kingdom and Germany, using herbs sourced from over 50 countries worldwide. The brand remains a certified B Corp and continues to champion sustainability and fair trade through certifications like Fair for Life.
