Motorola, originally founded as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in Chicago in 1928, is a pioneer in the telecommunications industry. The brand is credited with inventing the first car radio and the first handheld commercial mobile phone. Following financial challenges in the late 2000s, the original Motorola, Inc. split into two separate entities in 2011: Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility.

Motorola Mobility, the division responsible for consumer products like smartphones and smartwatches, was acquired by Google in 2012 and subsequently sold to Lenovo in 2014. Under Lenovo's ownership, the brand has revitalized its presence in the global market, particularly through the Moto G and Razr series. Today, while the company remains headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, for design and engineering, its manufacturing is globally distributed.

Production primarily takes place in China (specifically in the Guangdong province) via Lenovo's own facilities and partnerships with various Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs). To optimize local market delivery and tax efficiencies, Motorola also maintains significant assembly operations in Brazil and India.
