Dr. Martens is an iconic British footwear brand that originated from a cross-border collaboration of innovation and traditional craftsmanship. The brand's foundation dates back to 1945 in Germany, where Dr. Klaus Märtens developed a unique air-cushioned sole to aid his recovery from a foot injury. By 1959, the British shoe manufacturer R. Griggs Group acquired the patent rights and adapted the design for the UK market, adding the signature yellow stitching and grooved sole edges that define the brand today.

While the brand's 'Made in England' collection continues to be produced at the historic Cobbs Lane factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, the vast majority of Dr. Martens manufacturing shifted to Asia in the early 2000s. Today, standard production takes place primarily in Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Laos. Despite this global manufacturing footprint, the brand remains headquartered in London, maintaining its deep-rooted association with British subcultures and alternative fashion.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned significantly over the decades. Originally a family-owned British business, Dr. Martens was acquired by the private equity firm Permira in 2014. The company went public in 2021 and is currently traded on the London Stock Exchange as Dr. Martens plc. As of 2026, major investment groups, including Permira-managed funds and institutional investors like IngreGrsy, retain significant stakes in the company.
