Becel is a well-known brand of margarine and spreads, originally developed by Unilever in the 1960s with a focus on heart health. The name itself is derived from the acronym 'B.C.L.' (Blood Cholesterol Lowering). For decades, it was a staple of the Unilever food portfolio until the company decided to divest its spreads division. In 2018, the brand was acquired by KKR and became part of Upfield, which is now the world's leading producer of plant-based spreads and cheeses.
Becel products are manufactured in several locations globally to serve local markets, with significant production facilities located in the Netherlands. The brand emphasizes the use of plant-based oils, such as sunflower, linseed, and rapeseed oil, which are naturally rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Under Upfield's ownership, the brand has shifted its focus towards 100% natural ingredients and sustainability, including the removal of palm oil from several of its core products.
