The brand was founded in 1904 by William John Thatcher, who began making cider for his farm workers as a way of supplementing their wages. Over the decades, the business transitioned from a local farm operation into a nationally recognized brand, known particularly for its flagship 'Thatchers Gold'.

Unlike many traditional cider brands that have been acquired by global beverage conglomerates, Thatchers remains a family-owned and operated business. It is currently managed by the fourth generation of the Thatcher family. The manufacturing process remains concentrated at Myrtle Farm in Somerset, where the company manages hundreds of acres of orchards and its own milling and fermentation facilities.
