Freia Melkehjerter

Freia Melkehjerter represents one of the most iconic Norwegian chocolate products, often referred to by the slogan "Et lite stykke Norge" (A little piece of Norway). This brand has a deep-rooted historical presence in Norway, being founded in 1889 at Rodeløkka in Oslo. The Melkehjerter product specifically consists of heart-shaped thin slices of the classic Freia Milk Chocolate, known for its distinct flavor profile tailored to Norwegian tastes.

While the brand remains quintessentially Norwegian in its cultural identity, the corporate ownership has shifted over the decades. Originally an independent Norwegian company lead by the Throne Holst family, it was later acquired by the Scandinavian conglomerate Marabou, which in turn was purchased by Kraft General Foods (now Kraft Foods) in 1993. Since 2012, the brand has been under the ultimate ownership of Mondelēz International.

Despite its international corporate parentage, the production of major Freia chocolate lines, including Melkehjerter, continues to take place at the historic factory at Rodeløkka in Oslo, Norway. This local manufacturing helps maintain the brand's authentic connection to its origin and ensures the specific recipe remains consistent with the local heritage. Mondelēz International manages the brand through its Norwegian subsidiary, Mondelēz Norge AS.
