McVitie's Digestive Biscuit is a semi-sweet biscuit that originated in Scotland in 1839, developed by two doctors to aid digestion. The name 'digestive' comes from the belief that these biscuits had antacid properties due to the use of sodium bicarbonate in their original recipe. The biscuits are made from a blend of coarse brown wheat flour, sugar, malt extract, vegetable oil, wholemeal, raising agents (such as sodium bicarbonate, tartaric acid, and malic acid), and salt. McVitie & Price, the original company behind McVitie's, began manufacturing these biscuits in 1892. In 2016, McVitie's became part of Pladis Global, a multinational confectionery and snack company headquartered in the United Kingdom. Today, McVitie's Digestive Biscuits are produced primarily in the United Kingdom, with additional production in other locations to meet global demand. They are widely consumed in the UK and internationally, often enjoyed with tea or coffee, and are also used as a base in various desserts like cheesecakes.
