Appel is a renowned German brand with a history dating back to 1879, when Heinrich Wilhelm Appel founded a grocery business in Hanover. The brand is famously credited with introducing the term 'Feinkost' (delicatessen) to the German language. Known for its distinctive blue packaging and lobster logo—designed in 1905—Appel has long been a staple in the seafood aisle.
The production of these herring fillets takes place in Cuxhaven, a coastal town in Northern Germany, which serves as the brand's headquarters and primary manufacturing hub. This location allows for direct access to North Sea maritime traditions and processing expertise.
Ownership of the brand has evolved significantly. While it was long part of the Heristo AG group, Appel was sold in 2023 to Maris Food GmbH. This new parent company was formed as a strategic alliance involving the investment firm Sustainable & Invest GmbH and other partners to ensure the brand's long-term sustainability and maintain its traditional production roots in Germany.
