9Lives is a brand of cat food introduced in 1959 by StarKist Foods, a subsidiary of the H.J. Heinz Company. The brand gained prominence with its mascot, Morris the Cat, who became the face of 9Lives in 1969. Morris, an orange tabby, was adopted from the Hinsdale Humane Society in Illinois and featured in numerous television commercials portraying the 'world's most finicky cat' who would only eat 9Lives products. In 2002, Heinz sold StarKist and 9Lives to Del Monte Foods. Del Monte's pet food division was spun off as Big Heart Pet Brands in 2014, which was acquired by The J.M. Smucker Company in 2015. In 2023, Post Holdings, Inc. acquired multiple pet food brands from The J.M. Smucker Company, including 9Lives, and now markets the brand through its subsidiary, Post Consumer Brands. The manufacturing of 9Lives cat food occurs in multiple countries to meet global demand.
