7-Eleven is an American multinational convenience store chain founded in 1927 as Southland Ice Company in Dallas, Texas. The company initially sold ice and later expanded to include bread, milk, and eggs, operating during hours when most other grocery stores were closed. In 1946, the name '7-Eleven' was adopted to reflect the stores' extended operating hours from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm. Over time, 7-Eleven expanded globally, becoming the largest convenience store chain worldwide, with approximately 85,000 stores across 20 countries and territories as of August 2024. In 1991, 7-Eleven became a wholly owned subsidiary of Seven-Eleven Japan, which is part of the Japanese retail holding company Seven & I Holdings Co., Ltd. This acquisition made Seven & I Holdings the ultimate owner of the 7-Eleven brand. The company operates under various names in different regions, including Speedway in the United States and Stripes Convenience Stores in the West South Central United States. 7-Eleven stores offer a wide range of products, including convenience foods, beverages, gasoline, and private-label items like Slurpee and Big Gulp drinks. The brand is known for its 24-hour accessibility and large beverage sizes, which have become iconic in popular culture.
