Trader Joe's is an American chain of grocery stores that primarily sells products under its own private label. The brand originated in Pasadena, California, when Joe Coulombe rebranded his 'Pronto Market' convenience stores in 1967 to create a unique, nautical-themed shopping experience.

While the company is American by origin and culture, its ownership has been German for decades. In 1979, the brand was purchased by Theo Albrecht, the co-founder of the German supermarket giant ALDI. Specifically, Trader Joe's is owned by ALDI Nord, which operates independently from ALDI Süd (the entity that runs ALDI stores in the United States).

The manufacturing of Trader Joe's products occurs in multiple countries depending on the specific item. The company sources globally to maintain its diverse inventory, though a significant portion of its fresh and frozen goods sold in the US are produced by local domestic suppliers under contract. This private-label strategy allows the brand to offer competitive pricing by bypassing traditional brand name markups.
