Founders Brewing Company, established in 1997 by Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has grown to become one of the largest craft breweries in the United States. The brewery is renowned for its innovative and flavorful beers, such as the All Day IPA and the KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout). In December 2014, Mahou San Miguel, a Spanish brewing company founded in 1890 and headquartered in Madrid, acquired a 30% minority stake in Founders Brewing Company. This partnership aimed to expand Founders' reach and resources. By August 2019, Mahou San Miguel increased its investment to a majority stake of 90%, with Stevens and Engbers each retaining a 5% share. In March 2025, Mahou San Miguel completed its acquisition by purchasing the remaining 10% stake, making Founders Brewing Company a wholly owned subsidiary. This acquisition has allowed Mahou San Miguel to strengthen its presence in the U.S. craft beer market and diversify its portfolio. Despite the change in ownership, Founders Brewing Company continues to operate under its original name and maintains its commitment to producing high-quality craft beers in Michigan.
