Bajella is a banana brand that originated in Germany in January 1968, introduced by the Hamburg-based importers Willi Bruns, J. A. Kahl, and August Stier. The name 'Bajella' is derived from the English term 'banana yellow.' The brand was launched in response to the United Fruit Company's introduction of the Cavendish banana, a larger variety with a flawless yellow peel, which significantly increased their market share. To differentiate Bajella, the brand emphasized the unique flavor of its Ecuadorian bananas, despite their smaller size and occasional brown spots. This marketing strategy included campaigns featuring Barbara Pfleger, a model with freckles similar to the spots on Bajella bananas, promoting the slogan 'We don't eat the peel.' Over time, Bajella expanded its presence in the banana market, and in 1997, the brand name was trademarked by Dole Food Company, Inc., a major global producer and marketer of fresh fruit and vegetables headquartered in the United States. Today, Bajella bananas are sourced from various countries, including Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Venezuela, reflecting the brand's international reach and commitment to quality.
