Maybelline, now officially known as Maybelline New York, is one of the world's most recognizable beauty brands. Its story began in 1915 in Chicago when founder Thomas Lyle Williams observed his sister Mabel applying a DIY mixture of petroleum jelly and coal dust to her lashes. Inspired, he created a commercial version originally called "Lash-Brow-Ine," later renaming it Maybelline in her honor—a blend of "Mabel" and "Vaseline."

In 1996, the brand was acquired by the French beauty conglomerate L'Oréal, which transformed it from a domestic leader into a global powerhouse. While the brand carries the "New York" name and maintains its operational headquarters in Hudson Yards, Manhattan, its manufacturing is a global operation.

Products are produced in multiple countries to support international demand, with major manufacturing facilities and innovation centers located in the United States (notably Arkansas and New Jersey), France, China, Brazil, India, and Japan. This diverse supply chain allows the brand to remain the world's number one makeup brand, serving consumers in over 120 countries.
