Founded in 1706 by Thomas Twining at 216 Strand, London, Twinings is one of the world's most historic and enduring tea brands. The brand became famous for its 18th-century efforts to lower tea taxes in Britain and is famously linked to the creation of the Earl Grey blend, which was purportedly developed at the request of the 2nd Earl Grey in the 1830s.
Historically, all Twinings tea was blended and packed in the United Kingdom. However, as the brand expanded globally under the ownership of Associated British Foods (which acquired it in 1964), production shifted to a multi-national model. Today, while some premium or specialty lines may still be processed in the UK, the majority of mass-market packaging and blending occurs in facilities located in Poland and China to serve various international markets. The raw tea leaves are ethically sourced from major tea-growing regions including India, Sri Lanka, China, and Kenya.
