Rockstar Energy Drink was founded in 2001 in Las Vegas, Nevada, by Russ Weiner. It entered the market as an innovator in the energy drink space by being the first to offer a 16-ounce (about 500ml) 'double-sized' can for the same price as smaller competitors.

In March 2020, PepsiCo announced its acquisition of Rockstar Energy for $3.85 billion. This acquisition allowed PepsiCo to directly compete more aggressively in the high-growth energy drink segment. For the German market, the beverage is typically bottled by PepsiCo's local manufacturing partners or subsidiaries. While the brand remains American in heritage, its physical production occurs in various international facilities to meet regional demand.
