Portvin, commonly known as Port wine, is a sweet fortified wine originating from the Douro Valley in Portugal. It is produced by adding grape spirits to fermenting grape juice, which halts fermentation and preserves the natural sweetness of the grapes. This process results in a wine with higher alcohol content and rich, complex flavors. Port wine is traditionally aged in wooden barrels, which imparts additional flavors and character to the wine. The production of Port wine is regulated under the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, ensuring that only wines produced in the designated region of Portugal can be labeled as Port. This designation helps maintain the quality and authenticity of the product. The PDO status was originally registered with the EU on December 24, 1991, and later recognized in the UK on March 10, 2021. The term 'Portvin' is the Danish translation for Port wine, reflecting the product's international recognition and appeal. As a PDO product, Portvin is exclusively produced in Portugal, with the Douro Valley being the primary region for its cultivation and production. The unique terroir of the Douro Valley, characterized by its terraced vineyards along the Douro River, contributes to the distinctive flavors and quality of Port wine. The production and export of Portvin are significant to Portugal's economy, with the wine being enjoyed worldwide and holding a prestigious position in the global wine industry.
