The brand's origins date back to the Goldene Apotheke pharmacy founded in 1683 in Basel, Switzerland, by Hans Friedrich Eglinger. Formally launched as a modern oral health line, Meridol introduced its first mouthrinse in 1986 and its signature toothpaste in 1993, focusing on gum health through a unique amine fluoride and stannous fluoride formula.

Today, the brand is owned by the American multinational consumer products giant, Colgate-Palmolive Company. The brand was formerly part of GABA International, a Swiss-based specialist in oral care that was acquired by Colgate-Palmolive in 2004.
