Becel is a well-known brand of margarine and plant-based spreads with a legacy rooted in heart health. Originally launched in the 1960s in the Netherlands following a request from the medical community for a heart-healthy alternative to butter, the brand name is derived from the acronym BCL (Blood Cholesterol Lowering).
For decades, the brand was a flagship product of the Anglo-Dutch multinational Unilever. However, in 2018, Unilever sold its entire spreads division to Upfield, a global leader in plant-based foods. Today, Becel is produced in various manufacturing facilities across Europe to serve local markets like the Netherlands and Canada. The branding emphasizes its 100% plant-based ingredients, high Omega-3 content, and palm oil-free recipes, aligning with modern consumer demands for sustainability and wellness.
