The brand has a unique historical origin, having been created in 1940 by Coca-Cola Deutschland in Nazi Germany. Due to trade embargoes during World War II, the local plant could not receive the necessary ingredients for Coca-Cola, leading manager Max Keith to develop a new beverage using available materials like whey and apple pomace. After the war, the Coca-Cola Company regained control of the brand and eventually relaunched it globally.

Today, Fanta is the second oldest brand of The Coca-Cola Company. Ownership remains entirely with the American multinational, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Production of Fanta Exotic is decentralized; for the Danish and European markets, it is typically produced in local bottling facilities such as those operated by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners.
