CapCut is a video editing software developed by ByteDance, the same company behind TikTok. Initially launched in China in 2019 as JianYing, it was rebranded as CapCut in 2020 for the international market. The app is available on multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and web browsers, catering to a global audience. CapCut operates on a freemium model, offering both free and paid Pro versions with advanced features. It has gained significant popularity, reaching over 200 million active users by 2022 and over 1 billion downloads on the Google Play Store by January 2025. Despite its success, CapCut has faced controversies, including a class-action lawsuit in July 2023 alleging illegal data collection practices. Additionally, in January 2025, CapCut was temporarily banned in the United States due to national security concerns but was restored shortly thereafter. As of January 2026, CapCut continues to be a widely used video editing tool globally, offering a range of features for both amateur and professional content creators.
