Cholula Hot Sauce is a world-renowned brand originally founded in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. The brand was named after the 2,500-year-old city of Cholula, the oldest still-inhabited city in Mexico. It was introduced to the United States market in 1989 and quickly became one of the most recognizable hot sauce brands globally, identified by its iconic round wooden cap.
Historically, the brand was owned by the Jose Cuervo family (Tequila Cuervo La Rojeña). In 2020, the brand was acquired by the American spice giant McCormick & Company for approximately $800 million. Despite the change in ownership, the physical production of the sauce remains concentrated in Mexico to preserve its authentic flavor profile, which utilizes a blend of arbol and piquin peppers alongside local spices.
The global distribution is managed through McCormick's extensive supply chain, ensuring the product is available in numerous retail and food service locations across the UK and beyond. The Chili Garlic variant shown in the image is one of several flavor extensions that builds upon the original recipe with increased savory notes.
