Havana Club is a renowned rum brand with a rich history dating back to 1934. Originally produced in Cárdenas, Cuba, by the family-owned José Arechabala S.A., the brand was nationalized after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. In 1993, French company Pernod Ricard S.A. and the Cuban government established a 50:50 joint venture called Corporación Cuba Ron to produce and export Havana Club globally, except to the United States due to the U.S. embargo. In 1994, Bacardi, another Cuban family that had left Cuba after the revolution, acquired the original Arechabala family recipe and began producing Havana Club rum in Puerto Rico for the U.S. market. This led to ongoing litigation between Bacardi and Pernod Ricard over the ownership of the Havana Club name. Today, Pernod Ricard's Havana Club is produced in Cuba, while Bacardi's version is made in Puerto Rico. Despite the different production locations, both versions aim to embody the authentic Cuban rum experience, reflecting the brand's deep cultural and historical roots.
