GMX (Global Mail eXchange) is a prominent web portal and email service provider founded in 1997 in Germany. It was established by Karsten Schramm, Eric Köhnkow, and Peter Dolatre. Starting as an independent startup in Munich, GMX saw a significant shift in 2001 when it was fully acquired by United Internet AG. Today, it operates as part of the Ionos SE group, a subsidiary of United Internet. While primarily a digital service, its infrastructure and editorial operations are based in Germany, serving millions of users across the DACH region and internationally through its global platform. The brand remains under the ultimate control of Ralph Dommermuth, the founder of United Internet, who maintains a significant ownership stake.
