Instagram is a photo and short-form video sharing social networking service that was launched in October 2010. It was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, who initially developed an app called Burbn. Recognizing the popularity of photo-sharing, they refocused the app on this feature and renamed it Instagram. The platform quickly gained popularity, reaching 1 million registered users in two months and 10 million in a year. In April 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. Since then, Instagram has been owned by Meta Platforms, Inc., which is headquartered in Menlo Park, California. As of 2024, Instagram boasts over two billion monthly active users, making it one of the largest social media platforms globally.
