Nutella – origin, manufacturing and ownership

Nutella is the iconic chocolate-hazelnut spread originally developed by the Italian confectioner Ferrero. The recipe evolved from earlier Ferrero products (Giandujot and Supercrema) and Nutella as a jarred spread was first introduced in Italy in 1964. The brand name and its iconic jar are directly associated with the Ferrero company from Alba in the Piedmont region of Italy.

Manufacturing

Nutella is produced in multiple Ferrero production facilities around the world rather than a single country of manufacture. Ferrero operates dedicated Nutella production lines in several European plants (including Italy and Germany), as well as facilities serving regional markets such as Poland, Canada, Mexico, Turkey, Brazil, Australia and others. Because production is regionalized to supply local and export markets, manufacturing origin varies by jar and country of sale — hence “Multiple countries.”

Brand ownership and corporate structure

The Nutella brand was created by Ferrero and remains owned by the Ferrero Group. Legally the group’s international holding entity is Ferrero International S.A., registered in Luxembourg, while Ferrero’s historic founding and major operational presence remain in Alba, Italy. Ferrero is a privately held, family-owned confectionery group that continues to be the ultimate owner and operator of the Nutella brand globally.

Regional distribution

In Scandinavia (including Denmark), Ferrero’s regional operations are handled via Ferrero Scandinavia (with presence in Malmö and a branch in Copenhagen), which manages local sales, marketing and distribution for Ferrero brands in the Danish market.

This jar in the photo is clearly Nutella (the Ferrero hazelnut cocoa spread) but the image does not show a printed lot or country-of-origin label — manufacturing location therefore cannot be determined from the photo alone and is best represented as produced in multiple Ferrero facilities worldwide.
