Pepsodent is one of the world's most recognized oral care brands, with a history dating back to its introduction in the United States in 1915 by the Pepsodent Company of Chicago. Historically known for being the first brand to include 'Irium' (sodium lauryl sulfate) in its advertising, the brand was later acquired by Unilever in 1944.
Today, the brand's ownership is split: Unilever retains the rights to the brand in most international markets (including many European, Asian, and Latin American countries), while Church & Dwight has owned the rights to Pepsodent specifically within the United States and Canada since 2003. Manufacturing for Pepsodent products takes place in global facilities localized to their respective markets, often produced in Unilever-owned factories in countries such as Indonesia, India, and Vietnam for international shoppers, or within North America for that specific market.
