Green Giant traces its roots to the Minnesota Valley Canning Company, founded in Le Sueur, Minnesota in 1903. The "Green Giant" name and the Jolly Green Giant mascot emerged in the 1920s–1930s as the company marketed large, tender peas and other vegetables. Over the 20th century the business evolved into the Green Giant Company and later passed through ownership by Pillsbury and General Mills.
B&G Foods acquired the Green Giant trademarks from General Mills in 2015 and has been the ultimate owner of the brand trademarks since then. In November 2023 B&G Foods sold the U.S. shelf-stable (canned/pouched) Green Giant product line assets to Seneca Foods; B&G retained the trademarks and continues to own and operate other parts of the Green Giant portfolio (including certain frozen and Canada businesses) while licensing the U.S. shelf-stable line to Seneca.
