Mariestads is a historic Swedish beer brand first established in 1848 as Mariestads Bayerska Bryggeri. The brand is best known for its lager-style beers (often sold as Mariestads Export among other variants) and occupies a premium position in the Swedish beer market.
Although the original Mariestad brewery in the town of Mariestad closed decades ago, the Mariestads brand is today brewed in Spendrups' brewing facilities in Sweden (primarily Grängesberg under the Spendrups production network). The beer is produced according to traditional lager brewing practices and the brand markets itself as brewed following classic purity and quality standards.
Mariestads was created in Sweden and historically operated as Mariestads Bryggeri. The brand and assets were acquired into larger brewing groups during the 20th century and were purchased by Spendrups (Grängesbergs/Spendrups lineage) during the consolidation of Swedish breweries. Spendrups later revived and expanded the Mariestads range in the 1990s and continues to own, brew and distribute the brand.
Today Mariestads is a Spendrups-owned Swedish beer brand, brewed in Spendrups' Swedish breweries and sold primarily in Sweden (grocery trade, restaurants and Systembolaget) with occasional export. Spendrups remains the ultimate owner and operator of the brand, headquartered in Sweden and active across brewing, import and distribution.
