Hill's Pet Nutrition is a global leader in therapeutic and wellness pet foods, primarily known for its Science Diet and Prescription Diet lines. The brand's history began in 1939 when Dr. Mark Morris Sr. developed a specialized diet for a guide dog named Buddy, who was suffering from kidney disease. This breakthrough led to the formal creation of the company in 1948 in Topeka, Kansas, initially partnering with the Hill Packing Company for production.
Today, Hill's operates a sophisticated global manufacturing network. While a significant portion of its production occurs in the United States—specifically at facilities in Kansas (Topeka, Emporia, and Tonganoxie), Indiana, and Kentucky—the company also maintains manufacturing plants in the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Italy. In 1976, Hill's was acquired by the consumer products giant Colgate-Palmolive, which remains its ultimate owner. The brand continues to be headquartered in Topeka, where it operates a world-class Pet Nutrition Center dedicated to research and development.
