Mirabell Mozartkugeln are an Austrian-style chocolate praline (a marzipan/pistachio and nougat centre coated in dark chocolate) sold under the Mirabell brand. The Mozartkugel concept was created in Salzburg in the late 19th century and Mirabell grew as a large industrial producer of the round, foil-wrapped Mozartkugel variant. (de.wikipedia.org)
Historically Mirabell Mozartkugeln were produced in Grödig near Salzburg (Salzburg Schokolade / Mirabell facilities). Production at the Salzburg/Grödig factory ceased at the end of 2024 and the site was closed; Mondelez — the brand owner — has since relocated Mirabell production within its European manufacturing network and no longer produces the Mirabell Mozartkugeln in Salzburg. Mondelez has stated it intends to continue Mirabell production, but the new exact plant locations have not been publicly detailed. (theguardian.com)
The Mirabell name traces to a Salzburg confectionery (Rajsigl → Mirabell), while the Mozartkugel recipe itself is credited to Salzburg confectioner Paul Fürst (1890) — Mirabell commercialised a machine-made, fully round Mozartkugel at industrial scale. Ownership of the Mirabell/Mozartkugel products and rights is held by Mondelez International (headquartered in the U.S.), with local operations historically run via Mondelez Österreich and third-party manufacturers.
