Captain Morgan is one of the world's most recognizable spirits brands, famously named after the 17th-century Welsh privateer Sir Henry Morgan. The brand was originally created by Seagram in 1944 when they purchased the Long Pond Distillery in Jamaica. While the brand has deep historical roots in Jamaican distillation and Caribbean culture, its production footprint has changed significantly over the decades.
Today, Captain Morgan is owned by Diageo, a global leader in beverage alcohol. For the European market (as indicated by the 70cl bottle size and labeling in the image), the 'Dark Rum' variant is often blended and bottled in Italy or the United Kingdom, while the base spirits may still originate from various Caribbean countries. In the United States, production is largely centered at a high-tech distillery in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
The brand is celebrated for its spiced and dark rum varieties, maintained under the rigorous quality standards of Diageo's global portfolio. Despite its international manufacturing scale, Captain Morgan continues to lean heavily into its nautical heritage and Caribbean origins through its iconic label art and marketing narratives.
