Hellmann's began in New York City in 1913 when Richard Hellmann sold his popular mayonnaise from a deli; the product grew into the branded "Hellmann's Blue Ribbon" mayonnaise and later expanded globally. Hellmann's is a classic real-mayonnaise condiment (egg‑based emulsion of oil and acid) and is sold under the Hellmann's name in many markets (and as Best Foods in some regions, e.g., west of the U.S. Rocky Mountains).
Hellmann's is produced in multiple countries to serve local and regional markets. Large production sites historically include facilities in the United States (for example production targeted at the U.S. market) and Canada (Ontario), and additional manufacturing sites exist in other markets where the brand is sold. Recipes and ingredient sourcing may vary slightly by market; for the exact country of manufacture for any jar, check the "Made in / Manufactured in" line on the product label.
The brand was acquired into larger food companies over the 20th century and today is owned by Unilever. Unilever (operating under Unilever PLC) is the ultimate owner and manages Hellmann's through its Foods & Refreshment group and regional subsidiaries. In North America the brand is operated and distributed by Unilever's local entities (commonly Conopco, Inc. d/b/a Unilever or Unilever North America).
Because Hellmann's is a global brand with multiple regional production sites, the appropriate origin statement on any retail jar will reflect the local production site. For provenance-sensitive applications (sourcing, procurement or regulatory use), always confirm the stamped/manufactured‑in country on the specific package or request factory/manufacturer declarations from the supplier.
